Day 9 of NaNoWriMo

Day 9 of NaNoWriMo

Okay, I’ll admit it. I got discouraged. But I also learned a little about myself – so to me it is educational, a lesson learned.

I was plugging away on Gliese 581: Departure. Now supposedly Dad and I are collaborating on this. I say ‘supposedly’ because, probably due to other motivations on his part, (mainly he just wanted to motivate ME to write), he is serving as editor and I am the writer. When I suggested a collaboration I was thinking more about how I write a chapter, then he writes a chapter, and so on.

But that’s not going to happen.

So then I hoped he would give me plenty of ‘atta girls’ as I wrote. Just simple stuff such as “I liked the part where you described [fill in the blank]” or “you really hooked me in that first paragraph.” Instead his focus has been on the scientific side of things. This isn’t terribly surprising, I told him I wanted him to be the science expert. But begging him to read over what I had written for a week took its toll on me. Especially after he read enough to simply tell me about three things that didn’t work.

So it put me off of writing it and I spent the rest of the weekend doing a multitude of projects. After all, around here, there is always plenty to do.

At 40 years of age, I still want my dad’s approval. I can’t help it, it’s just the way I’m wired. But that wiring also seems to include a deadman’s switch. The minute I sense too much disagreement/disapproval and not enough reassurance/approval – the writing shuts off.

So the lesson learned for the day is this…

Whether or not he approves or comments favorably, I still need to write. I need to continue to push forward. If I don’t, if I allow myself to be waylaid or fall apart with a little bit of criticism then I won’t ever be successful in a writing career.

I don’t have to be rich, but I do expect to be published. I need to make sure that being published happens.

So lesson learned.

Starting word count today: 11,503

Goal for today: 2,000 word

Day 6 of NaNoWriMo

Day 6 of NaNoWriMo

Starting word count: 9,975

Goal: 12,975 words total

So 3,000 words for today. It’s 5:30 am, I’ve got a coaching appointment at 8am, then UMKC Music club at 10, then up to Mom’s to drop off Emily. I also need to eat breakfast soon.

Let’s call it two hours before the coaching appointment and then the rest of the day (give or take a few hours) for writing once I return from up north.

It might be do-able!

7:45 am – current word count – 11,355

HELL, YES!!!! I’m well on my way to goal for the day!

9:20 am – 11,456 total word count – off to an event with Emily, then up to Mom’s to drop her off and get back here, eat lunch and get back to work

Day 5 of NaNoWriMo

Day 5 of NaNoWriMo

Current word count: 9,806

Starting word count: 2,065

So…as of 5:05 pm on Day 5 I have written 7,741 words or an average of 1,548 words per day. Just 118 words per day short of NaNoWriMo goal.

Shit yeah, baby, I’m doing it!

I think I can pull ahead this weekend. I’m doing well so far, but I would like to pack it in this weekend and get some extra words in the ‘bank’.

Back to writing, back to Gliese 581: Departure

Day 4 of NaNoWriMo

Day 4 of NaNoWriMo

I didn’t get as early as start as I had hoped for. I started writing at 6am, but I did a bit of ‘story organization’ first. Mainly I listed the different story threads I want to cover.

So the starting word count for yesterday was 6,175 and I only wrote about 350 words yesterday.

Current Word Count: 7,687 – so wow, maybe 1,162 so far today? That doesn’t sound right. I think I must have written more yesterday. Maybe 1,000 or even 1,500 words. Let’s say I wrote 1,000 yesterday. So that would mean 7,175 starting word count for today and 512 words for today.

That means I’m behind goal for yesterday and today.

Not much time today, at least not until evening. In an hour we have to leave to get E’s vaccinations, then Dave’s one-on-one, (E and I will go grocery shopping during that) and then a quick dinner and back to see Amy for what is hopefully our last family counseling meeting EVER.

So…hopefully I’ll get an hour tonight to write. That and the next 45 minutes. Off I go!

7:15 – Current word count: 8,584 – so 1,409 words so far today? I’m running out of steam, so I’ll probably be short of goal again, but I think I can make up a lot tomorrow and this weekend.

Day 3 of NaNoWriMo

Day 3 of NaNoWriMo

Starting word count for day: 6,601

It’s 6:20 and I’ve written…oh hell, that’s confusing…I’m showing a total word count of 6,411 words. How did that happen?

I’ve written a couple of hundred words, but they seem to have gone away, or I wrote down the wrong total for yesterday. Huh…

6:25: Okay, well I went back and checked the starting total for yesterday. That was 4,736 and the actual starting word count for today is 6,175 and I’m currently 236 words in.

Onwards….

I’m BACK!

I’m BACK!

Well, sort of.

It is November 1st, 2010. The first official day of NaNoWriMo. I have picked Gliese 581, my new sci-fi series with Dad to write on during National Novel Writing Month.

For those not familiar with NaNoWriMo – the idea is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I round it up to 60,000, because it makes it a nice easy number to remember 2,000 words per day. Time to get started!

Starting word count: 2,065 on the Gliese 581 manuscript.

Goal for today: Total word count of 4,065

7:30 am – almost there, currently at 3,395!

8:45 am – stopped for shower and still need to eat – currently at 3,620 words or less than 400 words to go to make goal for the day!

6:45 pm – done for the day – word count is 4,736 – 671 words over goal! I’m on my way!
